I’ve been waiting for the day that I would get to photograph a couple at Mirror Lake in Medicine Bow National Forest. It’s crazy cause it’s really not that far from where we live, but seems like such an epic quest to get to. It just reminds me of how lucky we are to live where we do. Surrounded by gorgeous views and locations that people travel from far away to see.

But, that’s why it was so exciting when Hollie and Nik told me they wanted to do their engagement session at this bucket list destination. Anxious to get their photos in before the leaves started to turn, it only made sense that we would hit a few bumps trying to make it happen. Not literal bumps mind you, just basic 2020 fumbles. Like, covid tests, wildfires and the biggest curveball… a huge thunderstorm, rolling in just 10 minutes before our session.

And this storm packed a freezing cold punch from out of nowhere. Everyone at the trailhead was dumbfounded by it. No-one saw it on their radars or weather apps. So… we waited. We waited and prayed it would start to lighten up or our 2 1/2 hour drive would be in vein. And after about 30 min, Hollie and Nik decided they wanted to make it happen, even if it was under an umbrella.

It was one of those moments as a photographer were you think, this is the moment I must rise to the occasion. And it will either be the most EPIC publication worthy experience or it will be a big wet flop. Fortunately for us, it was a win. The session started pretty wet and foggy, but eventually the clouds cleared and we got to experience the beauty right after the rain. Colors popping, a little alpenglow… it was honestly pretty magical.

When I asked Hollie and Nik to tell me their favorite thing about each other, here’s what they had to say:

“She is very spontaneous, fun… She pushes me to be the best possible guy I can possibly be. She is my favorite person to be around any time of the day. We both introduce each other’s hobbies to each other and we both enjoy trying out new things together.” – Nik

“Honestly it’s hard to just say a few things I love about him because I love everything (except when he snores at night haha)! I love that he is so passionate about things and once he finds something he is passionate about, he’s all in. I love that he supports me in everything I do, even if he doesn’t understand or enjoy it himself. He is always willing to lend a hand and always see the best in people.” – Hollie

As I read these wonderful things they share about each other, it makes total sense that they would be game for a big adventure. Taking risks and ultimately got experience total joy on the other side. I’m so glad they encouraged us to follow through with our session and helped us make some wonderful memories.

The special guest for our adventure was their sweet dog “Whinnie.” With the rain showers and chill in the air, we weren’t able to have her tag along as much as she would’ve liked. But it was so much fun getting to see the joy she brought to Hollie and Nik. She even dressed for the occasion with an adorable handkerchief that read “My humans are getting married.”

It feels bittersweet knowing that we have to wait an entire year till we get to see them again at their wedding at Sweet Heart Winery. But I’m also glad our time together gets to be spread out. Hollie and Nik, congratulations on your engagement and I can’t wait to be there when you become Mr. and Mrs. Cervantes!
